You can become infected with an STI if you are exposed to the bacteria or virus that causes it. Most STIs can be transmitted through many kinds of sexual activities, including oral sex, anal sex, sharing sex toys, and direct contact with sores or infected fluids.

- Unlike HIV, other STIs do not always require exposure to semen or blood.
- You cannot always see STIs because some do not produce symptoms.
